Octopus includes a program called DiagnosticTool which can be used to diagnose performance problems with Octopus server access. This program allows you to determine if the connection speed to the Octopus server is good and consistent.
DiagnosticTool should be used over a long period of time (8 hours) to generate complete logs, which will allow you to determine if there are periods during the day when the connection is worse.
To launch the tool:
- Go to C:\Program Files\Octopus\ and start ESI.Octopus.DiagnosticTool.exe
- Enter your Octopus user name and password and click "Connect" to test if you have correctly entered the user name and password.
- Click on the "Start" button at the bottom
- Click on the "hide" button.
The application will be minimized and will remain in the "Tray" at the bottom of the screen. Leave the program running for a period of 8 hours during the day.
- After 8 hours, click on the icon in the "Tray" to open the DiagnosticTool window and click "Exit".
- Send the 4 log files to support@octopus-itsm.com so they can be analyzed.
- C:\TestDiag0k.csv
- C:\TestDiag3k.csv
- C:\TestDiag20k.csv
- C:\TestDiagURL.csv
Edit What does DiagnosticTool do exactly?
Every 5 minutes, DiagnosticTool makes 3 calls (0 kb, 3kb and 20kb) to the Octopus server and measures the response time. DiagnosticTool also makes a call to an external site for comparison (the default external site is http://www.hotmail.com). So after the program has been running for 8 hours, we have logs that provide the time for each call throughout the day, which allows us to determine if the connection to the Octopus server is good and consistent. By default, DiagnosticTool transfers less than 100 kb every 5 minutes.
