A CI types list is pre-configured in Octopus, along with their attributes and relationships with other types of CI. This configuration can be used as is, but if you want to modify it, this article will describe how to do it.
To add or delete a CI Type:
- Go to "Tools > Reference Data Management..."
- Open the node "CI"
- Locate the section "Types"
- To add a CI type, right-click and select "Add".
- To delete a CI type, highlight it, right-click and select "Delete".
Please note that the following CI types, their relations and their attributes cannot be deleted:
- Desktops
- Laptops
- Servers
- Printers
- Software
- IT Services
Each type of CI includes specific characteristics that must be configured:
- Description : allow identification of the CI type (mandatory in French and in English).
- Is a document : this option indicates that the CI is a document. In this case, the first CI tab is "Document" (not an attached file).
- Relations : this tab creates the possible relations between CI types.
- Attributes : this tab manages attributes specific to their CI type.
- Categories : allow definition of categories to be applied to the CI type.

Recommendations:
Be careful not to define the CI types at a small scale; the more types you have, the higher the CI management will be complex and expensive. Establish an acceptable level that will provide the needed information to follow the CIs, for both incidents and change evaluation. Limit the CI types to the needs of IT service delivery - resist to the temptation to include everything in the CMDDB).
